Transcona Railer Express hit the ice for a cause

Transcona Railer Express hit the ice for a cause

In hockey, players work hard together as a team in an effort to achieve one ultimate goal, to be victorious, to win that championship. For those fighting an illness such as breast cancer, that battle, that victory is also a team effort, where it takes everyone coming together to make progress, fight those hard battles with the eventual hope of finding a cure.

Express goaltender, Connor Shaw, knows firsthand the effects of this disease as he unfortunately lost his mother five years ago to breast cancer. But he also knows and appreciates the value of family, friends and the teammates whose support has been never ending. The Railers are committed in their support, to help Connor and to help the community by raising funds for breast cancer.

By lacing up with pink laces and using pink hockey tape in October (Breast Cancer Awareness month), the Express showed their engagement, spirit and hopes of making a difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer. Donations were accepted at their two October home hockey games, with the Railer Express team matching and raising a total of $1,726, towards breast cancer research. Also, if someone donated $10 or more, their name was entered in a draw to win one of five gift baskets.

At their November 3 home game, team President, Jerry Sodomlak presented Connor Shaw, his father, Ken and Cancer Care Manitoba representative, Carman Nedohin the donation cheque. While the cheque says $1,750 thanks to another generous $500 Donation at the game from Kim Orris to bring the total donation to $2350.

By working together we can all hopefully create a future without breast cancer.

Going the extra mile

The Railers team, management and coaches all have been working hard both in the pre-season and on the ice to produce a top-notch, winning team. Our combined goal is always to make the playoffs and win the MMJHL championship. In November the Express are right at the top of the standings, battling in a close race for first place.
